Description

Jay appoints a militia artillery officer

American statesman (1745–1829) who served variously as President of the Continental Congress, diplomat, and, from 1789 to 1795, first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Partly-printed DS, one page, 16 x 10, August 27, 1798. Governor of New York John Jay appoints “William Alexander, Captain of a Company of Artillery in the Brigade of Militia in the County of Herkimer where Michael Myers Esquire is Brigadier General.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Jay, and countersigned by secretary Daniel Hale. Matted and framed with a color portrait of Jay, to an overall size of 29.5 x 17. Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a few light creases, and a small spot of circular toning from worn, but intact seal, otherwise fine, clean condition. The signature is bold, dark, and otherwise unaffected. A handsome example for display. RRAuction COA.
