Claude Francois Chauveau-Lagarde

Lawyer (1756-1841) who came into the public spotlight in the early stages of the French Revolution working mostly as a public defender. He was the defender at the trial of Marie Antoinette and after the sentence against the Queen, he was accused of defending her too well and he had to justify his actions. He was also the defender at the trial of Madame Elisabeth the sister of the king Louis XVI and also of Charlotte Corday, who killed Marat. Manuscript DS, in French, signed “Chauveau-Legarde,” six pages both sides, 7 x 9.75, 1817. Lengthy untranslated legal document, signed at the conclusion by Chauveau-Legarde. Intersecting folds, several stamps, and some mild toning, otherwise fine condition. Worthy of further research.  RRAuction COA.
