Description

Nicholas sends congratulations to a battle-tested General

The last czar of Russia (born 1868) who reigned from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. In the wake of the Russian Revolution, Nicholas, Empress Alexandra, and their children were imprisoned and finally executed on July 17, 1918. Though the ultimate fate of the Romanovs—and the putative survival of Princess Anastasia in particular—became the stuff of legend, recent research has confirmed that the executions were indeed carried out, and that the remains were soaked in acid and burned. ALS in Cyrillic, in pencil, one page, 4.5 x 7, 1896. Letter to an unidentified recipient. In part, roughly translated, “I forgot the address of Gourko. [Joseph Vladimirovich Romeyko-Gourko (1828-1901) a Russian Field Marshal prominent during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78]. I wanted to congratulate him on his 50 years of service. Also send congratulations in my name to ‘Ovander,’ ‘Allis,’ and ‘Malakohov.’ Sorry for this inconvenience.” Notation at bottom in another hand indicates letter was received on August 12, 1896. Suede matted and framed with individual photos of the entire royal family to an overall size of 23.25 x 31. Nicholas’s formal coronation took place on May 14, 1896, and, at the time this letter was sent, Nicholas and his wife were in the middle of a European tour, with stops in Germany, England, and France. In fine condition, with stamp to middle, and expected light soiling.
