Description

A stern warning from Gallatin to the port collectors

Politician and financial genius responsible for the formation of what is now known as the Ways and Means Committee. LS, one page, 8 x 10, February 10, 1806. Circular letter sent to the Collector of Gloucester. In part: “It has been represented to me, that in some of the Districts…the Gaugers, Measurers, & Weighers, do not actually gauge, measure, & weigh the respective articles…but are satisfied with rough estimates…Being decidedly of the opinion, that the practice alluded to is not warranted by law…no Gauger, Measurer, nor Weigher ought to receive compensation, excepting for services actually performed…if…it shall be found that such practices have obtained in your District, you will take effectual measures for preventing a repetition of them hereafter.” Intersecting folds, one through single letter of name, scattered light toning and soiling, and a few creases, otherwise fine condition.
