LS as president signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, lightly-lined, 8 x 9.25, Executive Mansion letterhead, December 26, 1891. Letter to General James Grant Wilson. In full: “I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your kind note of December 21st and also of the first volume of the History of New York which accompanied it. Please accept my grateful acknowledgement for your kind attention. I shall be glad to see you when you reach Washington.” James Grant Wilson (1832-1914) who joined the Union Army late in 1862 as a major of the 15th Illinois Cavalry, and left the Army in 1865 as a brevet brigadier general. After the Civil War, he lived in New York where he became a well-known speaker, a frequent contributor to periodicals, and president of the Society of American Authors. He edited A Memorial History of the City of New York (four volumes, 1892-93). A mild uniform shade of toning, and a few scattered creases, otherwise fine condition.
