Italian-born British nurse (1820–1910), popularly known as the “Lady with a Lamp,” who first came to prominence for her care of troops during the Crimean War. She pioneered modern nursing and hospital practice, and her prowess as a mathematician led her to develop a number of important innovations in the field of statistics. Fountain pen signature, “With 1000 thanks, ever yours faithfully, Florence Nightingale,” on an irregularly trimmed off-white 5.5 x 1 slip. Matted with an unsigned portrait engraving of Nightingale, to an overall size of 8 x 10. In very good condition, with a few small stains, one lightly affecting the sentiment, two vertical creases, one touching a stroke of the ‘F’ and the ‘e’ of the first name, and light show-through from writing on the reverse.
