Russian novelist and moral philosopher who wrote the great novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina. He advocated a classless, self-sufficient society that prized love and charity above economics. Practicing his beliefs, the aristocrat renounced his worldly possessions to live virtually penniless among the peasants he loved, and in 1910, seeking to get closer to God, he abandoned his home and family. Leaving home secretly and accompanied only by his physician and a daughter, he died in a remote railway station only a few days later of pneumonia. Scarce vintage 3.25 x 5.25 Russian postcard photo of an elderly Tolstoy seated in a wheelchair with a younger man standing beside him, signed in fountain pen on the front below his image, “Leo’n Tolstoy” and dated January 1, 1905. In fine condition, with light stroke marks to the ‘L’ of the first name from a failed first attempt at signing, creasing to upper left corner, and small chip to the emulsion of the upper right corner tip. A stunning image of one of the most influential writers of the 19th century. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
