Description

Signer Richard Henry Lee computes the proceeds due Mrs. Richards from the estate of Mr. Turner

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Virginia (1732–1794). Lee served as President of the Continental Congress, yet opposed the Constitution because it lacked a bill of rights. He served in the Senate and resigned after the Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution. ADS, one page, 6.5 x 7.25, March 23, 1790. A handwritten document headed “Dr. the Ette [sic] of Mr Turner to Mrs Richards.” The first entry on July 4, 1783 is for “a bond amount—£82:10:0,” followed by “6 years & 1 month interest 25:1:10 1/2” entered August 4, 1789 and, on March 23, 1790, “interest on £71:19:10 1/2 from 4th August last…totalling £109:17:4 1/2,” the amount due to Mrs. Richards from the estate of Mr. Turner. Lee then deducts three payments already received which lessens the amount: July 4, 1788, “By my order favor of Mr. Lud Lee £16:10.” Thomas Ludwell “Lud” Lee was Richard Henry Lee’s nephew. August 4, 1789, “By cash rec’d of Morehead 19:2.” March 23, 1790, “By cash rec’d of Watson & Co. on Col. Washington’s order. 50:-:-.” Colonel William Washington (1752-1810), George Washington’s second cousin, was captured by the British at the Battle of Eutaw Springs a month before Cornwallis’s surrender. The defeated British general later commented that “there could be no more formidable antagonist in a charge, at the head of his cavalry, than Colonel William Washington.” Professionally inlaid to a slightly larger sheet. A couple of professional repairs to partial separations along folds on reverse, scattered light toning, and a few pinholes of paper loss at junction of folds, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
