Description

“He regards you and Macdermott as mushrooms and interlopers, whilst you two despise him as a stroller and a vagabond from the old regime”

TLS signed “G. Bernard Shaw,” one page, 8 x 10, personal letterhead, June 16, 1921. Shaw writes to the manager of the Theatre Royal, Alfred Wareing, in part: “Simultaneously with your letter comes one from Norman Macdermott of the Everyman Theatre, protesting that he too intends to tour in Yorkshire and the north, and has made arrangements with that in view. And I have no doubt that I shall have letters to the same effect from all the repertories in the country when they see Macdona’s sporting announcement. I need hardy say that Macdona deplores my reservation of the licenses to the repertories as an invasion of his touring privileges. As he has been touring continuously for me since 1912, he regards you and Macdermott as mushrooms and interlopers, whilst you two despise him as a stroller and a vagabond from the old regime.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one lightly touching a stroke of the ‘G,’ scattered light creasing, and a paperclip impression to the upper left corner. Alfred Wareing was a pioneer that helped to bring about the renaissance of the the touring movement which brought the plays of London to the provincial areas of Great Britian. RRAuction COA.
