“I gratify a descendant of Miles Standish by sending you this”

Esteemed American politician and orator (1782–1852) who was a longtime member of Congress and who served as Secretary of State under Harrison and Tyler. ALS signed “Danl Webster,” one page, 8 x 10, July 8, 1845. Letter to an gentleman. In part: “I gratify a descendant of Miles Standish by sending you this. I do not suppose it practicable, at this Day, to look up estates belonging to Puritan Soldiers, even if there were such. If however you fall in with any body…who knows anything of the traditions of the Family, it would please my neighbor if you would make it a subject of conversation & inquiry.” In very good condition, with intersecting folds, light soiling, a few brushes to text, and a small separation along one fold.
