James McHenry

A military surgeon in the Revolutionary War, McHenry was captured by the British at Ford Washington late in 1776, but was freed in a prisoner exchange early the next year. Returning immediately to duty, he was assigned to Valley Forge, where in May he became George Washington’s private secretary. Free-franked address panel, folded to 5.5 x 3.5, addressed in another hand to “David Henley, Esq., Agent for the Department of War, State of Tennessee, Knoxville,” and franked in the upper right corner, “Free, James McHenry.” In very good condition, with paper loss to top left corner, partially separated vertical fold to left of center, and an old tape repair to top portion of fold.
