Description

Recommending a census taker who is “an active & efficient friend of the present State & National Administration”

ALS, one page, 8 x 10, September 19, 1839. Letter to Samuel Patterson recommending a census taker. In part: “There is a very respectable man, by the name Robert King, Esq.…who is desirous of obtaining the appointment to take the census…He has met with reverses of fortune in his day & is now obliged to work hard at his trade for his living; but there is no man in the town where he lives who maintains a better character. He is an acting magistrate & a man of business & is an active & efficient friend of the present State & National Administration. I believe his appointment would give general satisfaction whilst it would be peculiarly agreeable.” Some small separations along intersecting mailing folds, with a couple lightly affecting signature, some scattered mild toning and edge chipping, and two blocks of old adhesive remnant to top and bottom edges, otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
