In part: “Am in receipt of the copy of your letter to Mr. W. D. Ward in the last paragraph in which you instructed him to bill me personally for his timing services. This is most surprising to me as it is no more customary for the winner of a cross-country race to pay the timers than for the winner of a closed course race to pay them, or for the winner of a boxing contest to reimburse timers or referee either before or after the contest. The lack of ethics in the latter is immediately apparent.” Accompanied by carbon copies of correspondence between Eynart and Doolittle.
