Born Felice Peretti di Montalto (1521-1590) who served as Pope from 1585 to 1590. He was responsible for reforming the central administration of the church, instituting financial reforms to restore solvency to the papal states, completing Saint Peter’s dome and rebuilding the Vatican. LS in Italian, signed “Come fratello a servirle F. Felice Card. de Montalto,” one page, 8 x 11, July 12, 1581. Letter to the prior of S. Michele in Fano, informing him that he was able to arrange an audience with Pope Gregory XIII for the town delegates. Partial second integral page bears an address panel in another hand, as well as an intact paper seal. Less than four years later, Montalto would succeed his political enemy, Gregory, as pope. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, with one vertical fold through signature, scattered light foxing, some mild haloing to signature, and several small areas of ink erosion to text.
