Description

Norway’s most esteemed composer

Important Norwegian composer and pianist (1843–1907) whose works, often with a strong nationalistic flavor, include such repertory staples as the Piano Concerto in A minor, the incidental music to Peer Gynt, and the Holberg Suite. Original vintage 4 x 6.25 cabinet photo of the elderly composer, by N. Perscheid of Leipzig (and so stamped on reverse), signed and inscribed in ink on the reverse, “To Professor Hugo Becker [cellist and composer, 1863–1941]—nowadays King of Norway! With thanks and appreciation, Edvard Grieg, Kristiana, 13/11/05.” In very good condition, with light scattered spotting (some on Grieg’s face) and silvering and a few tiny abrasions to image, and light soiling to signed side, with part of inscription and signature written over the photographer’s imprint. The writing is otherwise clear and dark. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
