TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 5.5 x 9, War Department letterhead, April 30, 1907. Taft responds to an inquiry about legal or business employment in the Philippines. In part: “I think there are good opportunities for either, if one is willing to work and wait for results, and to put up with the loneliness and long distance from home, and the tropical climate…There are a good many lawyers there, and you will find a good deal of competition, but to one who has the right kind of principles and determination, I think there is a good deal of opportunity.” Along the left edge, Taft adds a handwritten postscript, “Be prepared to live in Manila a year for study of Spanish and law without making a dollar—WHT.” In fine condition, with light rippling from moisture, a bit of light foxing, and Taft’s signature and postscript a shade light, but completely legible.
