Cubs outfielder who retired at the peak of his career to wed the daughter of a real estate magnate. TLS signed “‘Big Bill’ Lange,” one page, 8.5 x 11, Wm. A. Lange, Real Estate and Insurance Broker letterhead, January 19, 1937. Letter to a young baseball enthusiast in reply to a request for an autograph. In part: “[I] am well acquainted with some of the old players, such as Gus Weyhing, Jack Glasscock, Jess Berkett, Billy Hamilton and most of the others that you mention. The story you have about Cap Anson fining me $100 was also correct. Most of these things are exaggerated. Ever since I quit baseball, I have been in the real estate and insurance business and have never regretted doing what I did, although I loved the game very much, but had the opportunity to go into business, which I did, and stayed in.” In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, two punch holes to left edge, wrinkles and a few tiny spots of toning, affecting nothing.
