Description

Roosevelt and Taft sign a military appointment for a future Brigadier General, who had fought in the Philippine Insurrection and would later receive the Distinguished Service medal

Partly printed DS, signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as president and “Wm. H. Taft” as secretary of war, one page, 21 x 16, June 10, 1905. President Roosevelt appoints Benjamin Alvord a “Military Secretary, with the rank of Major.” Signed at the conclusion by Roosevelt, and countersigned by his Secretary of War, William H. Taft. During the Philippine Insurrection, Alvord (1860-1927) served as a regimental adjutant and also as an Adjutant General of a division in the field, and was brevetted for conspicuous gallantry in action against insurgent forces at Cainta, in 1899. In 1901, he was Adjutant General of the Department of Northern Luzon. Later, Alvord was promoted to Brigadier General and was the first Adjutant General of the American Expeditionary Forces, and would accompany General John J. Pershing to France in World War I, and would receive the Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service during the war. In fine condition, with a mild shade of overall toning, and a few dings and creases to top edge. Both signatures are large and quite bold. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
