Description

During the early months of the New Deal, FDR attacks the problem of soil erosion not only in the Dust Bowl of the prairie, but in the entire nation, by establishing erosion-control nurseries which within three years would produce 130 million trees and seedlings

Important TLS, as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, October 5, 1933. Letter to congressman Byron B. Harlan. In full: “Your letter of September eighteenth, in regard to the proposed establishment of erosion-control nurseries in various sections of the country and reporting the objection of the Nurserymen's National Planning Committee to this activity, has been received. The plans for the establishment of such nurseries are by no means complete and it is, accordingly, impossible to discuss the matter adequately from the stand-point of the effect on commercial nursery interests. It is believed, however, that as the development of these nurseries proceed, it will be possible to direct the activities so that little, if any, conflict with commercial agencies will result. I am advised that consideration is being given to the feasibility of utilizing plants available in commercial nurseries and also for production through commercial agencies of such supplies as will be promptly needed in demonstrations of erosion-control methods. Detailed plans of the relationships that may be developed between the commercial agencies and the Bureau of Plant Industry nurseries have not yet been completed, however, and accordingly direct consultation between representatives of the nursery interests and the proper officials of the Bureau of Plant Industry might prove mutually advantageous.” In fine condition, with light horizontal folds, including one through signature, and a staple hole to top left. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
