Max Born

German mathematician and physicist (1882–1970) who won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in quantum mechanics; it was to him that Einstein made the famous remark, “God does not play dice with the universe.” TLS signed “M. Born,” one lightweight airmail page, 7.5 x 11, December 8, 1964. Letter to the Science Editor at Charles Scribner’s Sons. In part, “Thank you for inviting me to contribute to your book on scientific memoirs…your suggestion of writing 50,000 words…is impossible for me to follow, as I am 82…I have in mind to write quite a short scientific biography of perhaps 2,500 words for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.” In fine condition, with intersecting mailing folds and address information on the reverse showing through lightly.
