The “Divine Sarah” as Photina

French actress (1844–1923), known as “The Divine Sarah,” who became one of the most revered personalities ever to grace the stage. Original vintage 4.25 x 6 full-length cabinet photo by Otto of Paris, of Bernhardt in costume as Photina from La Samaritaine (Woman of Samaria), signed at the top in fountain pen, “Souvenir de Sarah Bernhardt 1904.” La Samaritaine (Woman of Samaria) was a play with a biblical theme, written by Edmond Rostand for Miss. Bernhardt and introduced by her during the Easter season of 1897. She played Photina, a girl from the Samaria district of ancient Palestine, who become a supporter of Jesus and leads her whole tribe in converting to Christianity.
