Jefferson and Madison sign passage for the Jane

Partly printed DS, signed “Th: Jefferson” as president and “James Madison” as secretary of state, one page, 20.5 x 16.5, May 27, 1806. A four-language ship’s papers issued to John Hooper ““master or commander of the Brig called Jane…lying at present in the port of Boston bound for South America and laden with Beef, Bread, Brandy, Dry Goods, Hats, Merchandise, Iron, Rum, Rice, Salt, Boards, Wine, Tobacco, Earthen ware.” The document bears two embossed paper seals at left . In very good condition, with scattered edge creasing and chipping, previous intersecting storage folds, scattered mild toning, some lightly affecting top of Jefferson’s signature, and light creasing and wrinkling.
