In part: “I agree that there is a real need for a good theatre publication as you describe. However, I’m not sure my backing would be appropriate. The great concern, of course, is not a temptation to meddle with or influence the content of such a venture (I would not), but that my involvement doubtless would be perceived by the theatre community and the public at large as seeking influence; both in its specific criticism and treatment of larger issues.
