Partly-printed DS, signed “Theodore Roosevelt” as President and “Wm. H. Taft” as Secretary of War, one page on vellum, 15.5 x 21, December 20, 1904. President Roosevelt appoints Peter Leary, Jr., a Brigadier General, signed at the conclusion in black ink by Roosevelt, and countersigned by Secretary of War William Taft. Leary was a career army officer who first served with the Baltimore, Maryland Volunteer Light Artillery during the Civil War. In 1863-1864 his unit was involved with the campaigns at Gettysburg and in Maryland. After the Civil War ended, Leary joined the regular army and participated in the 1869 war against the Arapahoe Indians, the Modoc War of 1873, and against the Nez Perce Indians in 1877. In 1898 he was serving with Battery D of the U.S. 4th Artillery when his unit was ordered to the city of Tampa, Florida to participate in the Spanish American War. Battery Leary at Fort MacArthur is named after him as well. This document, signed by both a president and a future president, is accompanied by a copy of Eyewitness to the Indian Wars and other research. Included in the book are photos picturing both Leary and the Battery named in his honor. In fine condition, with light wrinkling and creasing, handwritten portions of text a couple shades light, but totally legible, some mild toning along bottom, and slight pooling of ink to a couple letters of Roosevelt’s signature.
