Description

Taft humbly declines a speaking invitation from the NAACP

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, personal letterhead, November 7, 1915. In this letter, the accomplished luminary humbly declines a speaking invitation from the NAACP. Matted and framed to 16.25 x 12 with a portrait of its illustrious signee, the letter reads in part: “I … regret it will not be possible for me to attend the annual meeting of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, to be held at Carnegie Hall on Lincoln’s Birthday. I have made an engagement to speak before the National Geographic Society in Washington … and am to remain over there for Saturday … to attend a business meeting of the Red Cross. I have just been appointed Chairman of the Central Executive Committee of that organization.” In fine condition with some scattered, yet light creases. Taft did make time for the prestigious organization, however, as he and the NAACP established a committee that year (of which Taft was a member) to choose the recipient of the Spingarn Medal; this Medal was bestowed upon individuals within the African American community so as to call attention to the existence of their distinguished merit and achievement. Its objective was to encourage the ambition of the African American youth. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
