Partially printed DS, one page both sides, 12 x 8.5, May 1, 1866. This handsomely engraved certificate for one share of capital stock in the American Express Company was signed “Henry Wells,” as president and “Wm G. Fargo” as secretary. The modest stake in ownership was issued to J.B. Penfield of Oswego. Ink cancellation stamps touch upon Wells’ hand, and very lightly passes through Fargo’s signature, yet this incident of the registration process in no way detracts from the potency of either writing. The document is in fine condition with a few unobtrusive pinholes, a negligible ink stain at lower right (well away from the signatures, and mostly in a blank area), and faint folds. RRAuction COA.
