Description

“I trust you are in no danger”

Prominent American politician (1782–1850) who served as vice president under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and later wielded great power and influence in the Senate as a champion of Southern causes, including slavery. ALS, one page, 8 x 10, February 26, 1839. Letter to Sol. Van Reutclair. In part: “Circumstances, which I need not explain, will not permit me to interfere directly in your favor, but I have seen & conversed with the Vice Pret and the Attorney Gen’l Mr. Grandy in reference to your case, and I feel confident they will render you all the aid in their power. I trust you are in no danger.” Integral second page bears a free-franked address panel in another hand. In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, and a small spot of toning to right edge from wax seal. RRAuction COA.
