Partly-printed DS, one page, 10.75 x 16.75, September 8, 1848. Secretary of State Buchanan signs a passport, #10011, for Christopher Erving, along with his wife and daughter, who will be travelling abroad. Left side bears a physical description of Erving, noting his forehead, nose, mouth, chin, and face are all “medium.” Signed at the bottom by Buchanan, and also signed at the lower left by Erving. In very good condition, with intersecting folds, with a couple light vertical folds slightly affecting signature, light overall toning with a few heavier spots, including one next to signature, light damp staining along top edge, and an almost complete separation to integral second page.
