Description

The Commander-in-Chief authorizes passage for the barque “Newton”

Partly printed DS, signed “M. Van Buren” as president, one page on vellum, 11 x 15, dated June 19, 1841. With this official declaration in the form of a ship’s pass, President Martin Van Buren (1782-1862) allowed one John B. Sawyer to travel freely in his vessel, the barque Newton, without fear of “hindrance, seizure or molestation.” The 8th President formally executed the certificate by placing his flowing, “M. Van Buren” signature at bottom right. The Chief Executive’s penning, though affected slightly by mild wrinkling and an irregular adhesion to the last name, boasts full legibility. Consequently, acting Secretary of State John Forsyth was sure to sign the executive order, as well. Wrinkling and generally negligible areas of toning are present, and, understandably, the scallop-topped ship’s pass carries intersecting folds. This relic, however, still showcases its embossed seal at lower left, which remains completely intact, and is in otherwise fine condition. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
