John F. W. Herschel

British mathematician, astronomer, and inventor (1792–1871) known for his discoveries related to the moons of Saturn and Uranus and for his pioneering work in early photographic processes, including coining the word “photography” itself. ALS signed “J.F.W. Herschel,” one page, 4.5 x 7.25, June 2, 1827. Herschel declines taking part in an expedition to “cavern in Maidstone,” and announcing he is “going to make the observation at the Observatory at Camden Hill.” In very good condition, with paper loss to top left, writing a shade light, but completely legible, bisecting vertical fold through single letter of signature, pencil notation to bottom, and mild toning, a bit heavier to edges.
