“I never praise [books] unless I think they deserve praise”

Eminent British writer (1866–1946) who pioneered the science fiction genre with such classic novels as The Time Machine, War of the Worlds, and The Invisible Man. ALS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Lou Pidou letterhead, February 1, 1928. Wells writes to Mrs. Colby. In part: “I take the praising of books very seriously and I never praise them unless I think they deserve praise. There is no … politeness about me in that matter. I think your book a most charming, careful, excellent piece of work. Thank you for sending it. In very good condition, with intersecting mailing folds, glue stain to top margin, a few corner chips, tears and stains touching blank portions only, and light wrinkling.
