Union general (1824–1886) who distinguished himself in the Battle of Gettysburg and later commanded Custer and the 7th Cavalry against the Cheyenne in the disastrous 1867 campaign known as “Hancock’s War.” LS, two pages, 5.5 x 8.5, Governor’s Island letterhead, October 17, 1882. Hancock writes to Thomas D. Suplée regarding the late Col. Richard Realf. In part: “At the time mentioned in your letter—1867–8—this island was a depot for infantry recruits for the Army, but in 1878 the depot was removed to David’s Island, N.Y. Harbor, and doubtless the records of 1867 were sent to the Adjutant General’s office…. By writing to the Adjutant General of the Army you may be able to procure … the information you seek.” Pinholes, a few trivial wrinkles, and faint show-through of adhesive from slip affixed to reverse of second page (well away from text), otherwise fine condition.
