Anna McGowan, head of the household staff at the Roosevelt family’s Campobello compound, was the recipient of this $100 bank check from acting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882–1945). Dated December 27, 1944, the 6.5 x 2.75 instrument was signed by Roosevelt along the signature line in black fountain pen. The President’s bold penmanship authorized the withdrawal of said funds from his account at the Guaranty Trust Company of New York, and McGowan endorsed the document on the reverse. All other portions of the legal tender were filled out in another hand, and only a small section of the bank’s cancellations touches Roosevelt’s immaculate script. Fine condition.
