Description

LIVINGSTONE sets off for Zambezi: “Articles kindly sent for me to take on my Expedition”

Scottish missionary and explorer (1813–1873). After “disappearing” on an expedition to find the source of the Nile, Livingstone was found in 1871 by fellow explorer Henry M. Stanley, who made the famous query, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?” LS, one page, 4.5 x 7, March 2, 1858. Livingstone writes from Kandal to James Robinson. In full: “I have much pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of package of articles kindly sent for me to take on my Expedition— I think you sincerely for the same….” Livingstone’s Zambezi Expedition took place from March 1858 to mid-1864. Numerous difficulties along the way, substantial expense, and Livingstone’s failure to find a navigable route to the African interior led to the British government’s recall of the expedition and widespread criticism of Livingstone in the press. In very good condition, with intersecting folds (vertical fold to first name), soiling and spotting, and a few wrinkles, small tears, and holes (tape repair to reverse). RRAuction COA.
