Description

Earhart and her high-flying adventures

This rare, first-edition copy of Amelia Earhart’s (1897-1939) own book, titled The Fun of It: Random Record of My Own Flying and of Women in Aviation, was signed by the famed aviatrix herself. The pilot’s “Amelia Earhart” signature was placed on the reverse of her frontis photo, and her blue ink penmanship retains impressive clarity. (Featured below her desirable penning is the autograph of Bobbi Trout, a fellow aviatrix whom Earhart references throughout her tome.) Incredibly, the book itself still has its miniature photograph record, which rests in a pocket on the rear pastedown. The piece also features its original dustjacket (with scattered areas of paper loss), and light toning at the interior in no way affects the book’s otherwise fine and clean appearance. Accompanying the relic is a vintage airmail cover that was signed by Frank M. Hawks (also mentioned in the book, and a pilot with whom Earhart accomplished her first flight), as well as a typed letter signed by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau (financier of Earhart’s second attempt around the world). Additionally, exceptional provenance is present in the form of a letter signed by the book’s previous owner, career pilot, aviation historian, and author Benjamin L. Williams. Published in 1932 by Brewer, Warren, and Putnam of New York City, the 218-page hardcover work (5.5 x 8.25) serves as a memoir recounting the subject’s “high flying” adventures, and this example showcases Earhart’s desirable script.
