This first edition, later-printed copy of Martin Caidin’s The Astronauts was signed by all seven members of the famed “Mercury Seven.” The historic septet carefully signed the 192-page book in either black or blue ink, and each one of the alluring scripts displays nicely against the tan-colored leaf. This complete “Mercury Seven” roster includes the autographs of M. Scott Carpenter, Virgil I. Grissom, Leroy S. Cooper, Jr., John H. Glenn, Jr., Walter M. Schirra, Alan B. Shepard, Jr., and Donald K. Slayton. Found on the half-title page is what appears to be an inscription from Scott Carpenter, and author Martin Caidin also inscribed the piece (to Donna) on the front free end page; Caidin makes reference to the launch of Explorer XI and adds the date April 27, 1961. A few tiny, unobtrusive areas of spotting are visible on the leaf signed by the famous flyers, and some of the scattered staining to the end papers touches upon the author’s inscription. Mild rubbing and wear affects the dust jacket, yet the 5.5 x 8.25 book itself (published in 1960 by E.P. Dutton & Co. of New York) remains in fine condition.
