Description

“I wonder if French’s personal intervention is historical”

How remarkable it must have been for the recipient of this letter to read from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) himself the word, “Congratulations.” And, what’s more, the beneficiary of this kind remark is lauded for a written work apparently impressive enough to warrant the acknowledgement of one of the most influential writers of his day. In this undated letter (post 1907) written to one “Mr. Irwin,” Doyle remarks: “Congratulations upon you really fine article in the mail today—pretty correct too, so far as I can check it. (signed) Arthur Doyle.” Interestingly, the esteemed novelist adds the postscript of “I wonder if French’s personal intervention is historical.” Doyle’s writing is crisp and fully legible, and the 4.5 x 7 page (“The Athenaeum, Pall Mall” letterhead) exhibits fine condition (mild handling wear).
