Description

Explosive autograph on a striking image

This penetrating gaze set sights on at least 80 confirmed Allied planes during World War I, reducing each of them to scrap relics. Pictured here is the “Red Baron,” Manfred von Richthofen (1892-1918), who poses in full German military regalia for this von Dühren postcard photo. The striking image, published by Willi Sanke, actually captures some of the pilot’s official decorations, which he wears proudly on his left chest. Still presenting a handsome appearance, the stellar and very scarce treasure is accentuated by the subject’s own “Fr[eiherr] M. von Richthofen, Rittmeister” inscription. Despite the fact Richthofen inexplicably chose to sign in black fountain pen along his black image, the boldly scripted writing remains clearly visible. Light silvering is confined to the periphery of the rare, 3.25 x 5.25 survivor, but these very minor visual impediments in no way detract from the item’s otherwise fine and crisp display properties. An outstanding memento celebrating this most coveted of military and aviation personalities! JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
