Description

Gandhi’s legendary compassion for the “human condition” is on display in this thought-provoking message

In the midst of his campaign for Indian independence, Mohandas Gandhi (1869-1948) sent this heartfelt correspondence to the wife of his close friend, Dr. Behram Navroji Khambatta, regarding the health of her husband. Dated June 8, 1935, the translated message reads in full, “I was very happy to read your detailed letter. Do keep me informed. There must be an improvement everyday. It’s good that Dinbandhu is there.” Gandhi adds the sincere postscript: “Many regards to dear Khambatta.May God help him recover quickly,” and signs the note with “Bapu’s blessings.” Every bit of the 3.5 x 5.5 page is filled out in Gandhi’s hand, including the address panel on the reverse. Throughout his life, Gandhi served as a political and spiritual leader, and his legendary compassion for the “human condition” is on display in this thought-provoking message. In fine condition with a couple of small pencil notations, uniform toning, and a bit of trivial foxing. RRAuction COA.
