Description

Pius IX signs on Christmas Eve

Italian pope (1792–1878), born Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, who ascended the papal throne in 1846 and served until his death. Among the notable achievements of his 32-year reign, the longest in Church history, Pius convened the historic First Vatican Council, which included the doctrine of papal infallibility. Endorsement signature, “Pro gratia, Pius PP. IX,” on the adjacent leaf of a 7.5 x 10.5 manuscript document dated December 24, 1874, concerning three priests who are to be consecrated bishops. Light intersecting folds and a hint of subtle handling wear, otherwise very fine, clean condition. A notably “holy” date! RRAuction COA.
