Description

Richard Strauss

German composer (1864–1949) whose colorful symphonic poems and operas earned him a place among the most important figures in late-19th- and early-20th-century music. His best-known work is Also sprach Zarathustra (1896), which attained iconic status as the theme of the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. ALS in French, signed “Dr. Richard Strauss,” one page both sides, 5.75 x 8.25, personal letterhead, March 9, 1940. An untranslated letter to Maestro Domenico M. at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, sending thanks to the director of the Genoa Opera for the invitation to conduct, but respectfully declines, as he has stopped conducting. Strauss also mentions M. Macchi, a trip to Italy, and a production of Salome at the Teatro Carlo Felice. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope addressed in Strauss’s hand. A few stains (away from signature), otherwise fine, bright condition. RRAuction COA.
