Description

Catherine the Great reveals 18th-century Russian state secrets

Certainly, were this document of present-day relevance it would constitute a state secret of the most delicate variety. Alas, the centuries have withered away its considerable purpose, yet it remains resplendent in historical significance. Phenomenal, official military content is found in this handwritten letter from Catherine the Great (1729-1796) to Mikhailo Vasilievich, one of the Russian empress’s most important generals. (Vasilievich was instrumental in acquiring several Polish provinces.) Penned entirely in Russian, in part, the message is translated to read, “For the greater success of our military campaign in Poland we consider it necessary to divide our troops that are now in Poland in two divisions: one of which is to be commanded by General Baron Igelstrom, and the other one by General Krechetnikov. After handing over all the finances and all the document pertaining to our campaign against Poland to general Baron Igelstrom, we order you to return to be reassigned according to your rank. You always remain in our good graces….” Catherine used both sides of the 7.25 x 8.75 page to inscribe her direction, and despite compacting folds and very mild instances of toning, the empress’s flowing hand remains bold, bright, and clearly legible. The scarce and important document is dated December 8, 1791, which places the relic in the midst of Russia’s movement to intervene in the Polish democratic resurgence. (Catherine famously viewed the Polish Constitution of May 3, 1791 as a realistic threat to the European monarchies.) RRAuction COA.
