Manuscript document, signed “W: Churchill” by Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s distant ancestor of the same name, one page, 7 x 4.5, March 3, 1671. A receipt: “Received by virtue of an order from his Grace the Duke of Richmond a sum of ye moneys payable out of ye months Assessment [sic] for the Millitia [sic] of Dorsett shire the some [sic] of one thousand one hundred sixty pounds fourteen shillings & nine pence. I say received by me W: Churchill.” Docketed “for Winston Churchill his acct for 1160-14-9 ye 4 of March 71.” This first Winston Churchill (1620–1688) was the Prime Minister’s great-grandfather seven times removed. This earlier Churchill fought for Charles I in the struggle between the Royalists and the Roundheads, and after the Restoration, he was knighted by Charles II.
