A diverse collection of autographs penned by political luminaries who were in service during the nation’s centennial year of 1876. Neatly organized within a binder to facilitate viewing (and including a handwritten list from an early collector), the distinguished gallery is comprised of 66 ink signatures that were scripted by the likes of presidents, cabinet members, legislators, governors, and others active during that important year. Highlights among these prominent partisans include Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes (who provides his lesser-seen full name), Hamilton Fish, Alphonso Taft, William W. Belknap (who became the only cabinet secretary ever to be impeached in 1876), Thomas A. Hendricks, Confederate Major General James L. Kemper, and Union Major General O.O. Howard. Several of the pieces bear the date “1876,” and the scattered instances of soiling and ink migration are generally negligible. The signed items remain clean and are in fine condition.
