Description

American Red Cross Founder signs “Lovingly, and hopeful for good things yet, Clara Barton.”

With the compassionate elegance one would expect from such a charitable spirit, Clara Barton (1821-1912) closes this message, “Lovingly, and hopeful for good things yet, Clara Barton.” The one-page, 8 x 10.5 memo offers thought-provoking insight into Barton’s activity as a leading humanitarian, even at 90 years old! Addressed to Mary I. Kensel, Secretary of the National First Aid Association of America, and dated March 4, 1910, the message reads, in part: “Something tells me that the sun does not shine quite so bright in Boston as it does in Glen Echo, and so I am sending you a little in this envelope by the way of several new memberships … You will understand from the memberships coming in like this, that, I too, am anxious that they would be forwarded as soon as they are out. I also enclose three one dollar bills … for memberships as mentioned below [one of which is her own!] … Hoping that the above will spread a little good cheer… ” Barton closes the letter with a potent black fountain pen signature, which remains an impeccable example of the Red Cross founder’s penning. A touch of mild soiling and handling wear, otherwise fine condition. RRAuction COA.
