This 9.75 x 13.75, matte-finish photograph reveals the image of acting Supreme Court Chief Justice William Howard Taft (1857-1930). The sepia-toned image pictures the head jurist in a seated pose, and clad in his judicial robe. Carefully penned along the bottom margin, Taft’s striking, black fountain pen inscription reads, “For my dear friend and classmate of more than half a century, C. Sidney Shepard of New Haven, New York, with earnest good wishes and affectionate regards,—(signed) Wm. H. Taft—Washington—Dec. 9th 1927.” Small corner creases and very modest silvering, otherwise fine condition. A scarce and well-kept, signed image from perhaps the most influential phase of Taft’s varied career! JSA/John Reznikoff Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
