Color satin-finish 14 x 11 photo of the “Earthrise” taken from the orbit of Apollo 8, signed in gold ink, “In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth ... Frank Borman, Apollo 8, 10/24/68” (Borman mistakenly dating the mission to October instead of December). After launching on December 21, 1968, the Apollo 8 crew took three days to travel to the moon. They orbited ten times over the course of 20 hours, during which the crew made a Christmas Eve television broadcast in which they read the first ten verses from the Book of Genesis. The crew timed the reading to coincide with a full view of planet Earth hanging in the empty blackness of space, rising over the dull gray horizon of the lifeless moon. At the time, the broadcast was the most watched TV program in history. Matted and framed to an overall size of 20.5 x 17.5. In very fine condition. JSA/Scott Cornish Auction LOA and RRAuction COA.
