Description

George G. Meade

History remembers well that it was Ulysses S. Grant whose prowess on the battlefield led Union forces to overcome the ever-resilient South. Yet, pictured here is another hero: George G. Meade, the Union General whose efforts at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 resulted in the defeat of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee. This bust-length, in-uniform depiction no doubt would have been favored by the thoughtful tactician, as perhaps this above-the-shoulders illustration is a comment on his rather cerebral approach. Below his image, Meade boldly signs, “Geo. G. Meade, Maj. Genl. Comd.” A hint of subtle soiling, otherwise fine, bright condition. The carte-de-visite measures to 2.5 x 4. RRAuction COA.
