In service of the Union Army during the nation’s greatest battle, General Philip H. Sheridan (1831-1888) was instrumental in forcing the surrender of Confederate headman Robert E. Lee. Presented is a bank check signed by “Little Phil” himself. Drawn on Sheridan’s account at Union National Bank of Chicago, the legal tender was paid to the order of one “C. Crocker” in the amount of “Five thousand dollars in gold”—a staggering sum for an instrument dated August 24, 1875! Sheridan added “P. H. Sheridan” to the signature line of the 7.25 x 2.75 check, each line of which was filled in by the career army officer’s own hand. A two-cent, prepaid Internal Revenue stamp is printed on the front of the piece, which also bears penciled notations at lower left, slight paper loss along the left edge, vertical fold, toning, and soiling; very good condition.
