Description

RARE GEM: NY taxpayers’ petition signed by legendary financier “DIAMOND JIM” BRADY

Colorful and legendary American businessman and financier (1856–1917) who captured the popular imagination through his outsize personality, enormous appetite for food, profligate spending on jewels and luxury items, and romantic liaison with actress Lillian Russell. Scarce manuscript DS, boldly signed “Jas. B. Brady, N.E. B’way, Cor. 46 St.,” three lightly lined pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 12.5, no date. A petition addressed to the “Honorable Assembly.” In full: “We the undersigned tax payers of the City of New York request you to pass the new Judicial District bill for the West Side of the City the same being required on account of the rapid growth and increase of population.” Brady has signed on the first page; the petition has also been signed by dozens of others, including Louis P. Fuhrmann (future Mayor of Buffalo) and Philip Brady (perhaps a relative). In very good condition, with horizontal folds (one through Brady’s signature; short edge separations, just touching his address), another signature just touching first letter of Brady’s, scattered soiling, and light wrinkling, no faults affecting the legibility of the large, dark signature. Brady is extremely elusive in any form; according to American Book Prices Current, no autograph material from him has appeared at auction in the last three decades. RRAuction COA.
